The sound of metal on wood echoed through the hallway as Ezekiel made his way towards the meeting room. He had walked these halls for centuries, nearly half a millennia, and nothing had changed. There was a change in the sound as he made the right around the corner, and he made his way towards the left side of the hall to avoid hitting the table that stood against the right wall. He extended his hand, palm out, and allowed his finger tips to brush the stone to his left. It was worn and full of mountains and valleys, but it had been that way for as long as he could remember. Once he touched something he almost never forgot its feel, the same went for smell, but he tried not to rely on that as often because when too many smells come together they were easy to get jumbled up. Feeling, that was different; something’s feel only ever changed for one thing, and that was time.
The cool, damp air of the hall gave way to the warm smell of burning wood as he entered the small room that was designated for the meetings between the Queen, Dev, and himself. It was only about half the size of a normal living room, but it served their purpose well. There was a rug that extended from the heart, mostly for Zeke’s benefit, a small book case to the right of the door, and a table with three chairs, one on one side two on the other, set directly in the middle of the room. Beside the fireplace lie a small stack of wood to keep the fire ablaze, as it was at all times. Thinking about it, the last time he had found this room without a fire, even in summer months, was the night before he lost his vision. He had kept the fire blazing for their meetings, tending it, adding wood, starting it when it went out, for over a decade, and since that night the room had not changed. It had been.. preserved, if you will. He could walk anywhere in the room and know the exact distance he was from any given object, and it comforted him. He felt safer in this room than anywhere, save his living quarters, in the entire world.
Closing the door behind him he took two steps, made a sharp right, took two more steps, and pulled his chair back from the claw-foot maple table. He sat, his arms extending onto the padded arm rests, and took a deep breath. Smells like they decided to burn cedar today. he thought to himself. He loved the smell, but right now that was unimportant. He pushed his personal thoughts aside and allowed the business side of his brain take over. They were going to war, everyone knew that, but what they didn’t know was just who they were going to war with. Alice, his beautiful, deadly Queen, was planning to wage war with the most powerful being in existence: the Morrigan. She had overthrown the former Lord of the Demons, whom Ezekiel had stumbled across once in his past, and now, after wiping out nearly every human, ruled the world. For this they would need plans, strategy, scouting; that was where the ancient, blind vampire came in. Though he rarely did scouting himself, he was in charge of that sector, and knew his men and women better than anyone.
Today they would be discussing who they would send first, who he trusted, and what a possible plan of action would be once the group returned to them in Germany. He had been given three days to come up with a list of the most reliable, trustworthy people he had at his disposal, and he had done just that. He had a small group, only six scouts, who would be sent to Greece. They were to cover the distance in two or three days, spend three to four days in enemy territory, and return home as quickly as possible. That was what he would propose anyway. He knew that as soon as he told Alice she may well reject it, but that was what seemed to be the best thing to do with the information he was given. If she rejected his plan, which he doubted she would, he would revise it and give her another speech later that day. But now, as he waited for the other two to arrive, the only thought on his mine was how he would deliver his tentative plan.
