The snow crunched softly beneath his paws as Uri padded slowly into the pack’s front yard. Though they could also be wolves the majority of their time while not performing pack duties was spent inside the mansion that lay nestled near the base of Klyuchevskaya Sopka, the highest point in the Russian Far East. When Uri merged his pack with the pack from Russia he found mountain to be his favorite place in their territory and ordered a home constructed that would allow them all to live in one location. He knew that the “mountain” was truly a volcano, but he also knew that it was dormant, if not extinct. It had been nearly eleven years since he became Alpha of this pack, and this was still his favorite area of his territory. Instead of heading towards the front door as he did the majority of the time he headed to the back, walking towards the head-high pines that rose up to the top of the mountain. Throwing his head back he sucked the cold, mountain air through his nostrils. There were deer in the area, and though they had their supply of food for the week he felt the need to hunt.
Unlike a normal grey wolf Uri was nearly five feet tall, though that is short for a werewolf, and weighed around two hundred pounds. There was not a deer, or elk for that matter, in the world that he couldn’t take down himself, and it made for good sport, stalking the creatures. He wasn’t twenty paces into the wooded space before the tracks of a large, male deer came into view. As he put his nose to the ground the scent became over powering and he broke into a swift run. Small trees flew by him on both sides as he dodged them without breaking stride. Moments later the animal came into view and he stopped dead, throwing snow from each side as he skidded slightly. Almost as suddenly as he stopped the animal saw him and broke. A chuckle came from his lips in the form of a growl and Uri took off after the animal once again. In just seconds he was slowing down so he could run beside him, and the look of fear in the animal’s eyes told him that his fun was done, and in one fluid motion he jumped and struck the deer. The flesh of the animal gave way easily beneath his huge jaws and he pulled him down by the neck, breaking it as he rolled. Once he had taken him down he stood, licking the blood from his face, and looked at his kill. It had been a clean kill, one bite, and a strong twist, and it was done. Instead of eating the animal himself as he would have preferred he dragged it back to his home for the “pups” to play with.
Once he reached the yard he dropped the animal and transformed, rising to his hind legs quickly and assuming his human form. “Dmitri! Get your brothers and sisters, there’s meat out here!” In just moments the oldest of his children came running out of the house, his two brothers and two sisters following him. As he came off of the back porch he transformed midjump and hit the ground on all fours. Next came Saranda, the smallest of the four children, who just so happened to be the fastest. After her came the twins Nikolas and Nikita, who were two years younger than Dimitri, and last was Ezekiel, the five year old boy who was the size of a nine year old. What he lacked in speed he made up for in strength, and was the second to rip a chunk from the fallen deer. As his children began to eat Uri walked towards the house, whistling as a small came to his face, and stepped on the back porch to call for his mate. “Lexy! I’m back beautiful, and the kids are fed for the night!”

His ears would have perked had they been able to.
“Kto?” she said, eyes narrowing in concern. Who?
“Ottsa,” he said, and then all of the children were running out into the yard, shifting from the front porch with excited yips. Father.
With a sigh of some relief and a smile, she reached for the towel, drying her hands before walking to the front porch to see her children yipping excitedly around a fresh catch; a doe. They ripped in eagerly and ate their fill, which did her good to see. So long as they were happy, she could be as well.
“Lexy! I’m back beautiful, and the kids are fed for the night!”
“You and your pet names,” she said in mock exasperation, but grinned and reached for him, melding into his hold as naturally as breathing. It always felt like forever had passed when they saw eachother again. Her wolf was uneasy when he was away, the unavoidable cry of wrong at the increasing distance between them. But it was better now. Now, her children were full and her pack was here and here, too, was her alpha and her mate.
She heard a yelp from the doe. No doubt Dmitri was already attempting to assert his dominance. She offered a feral snarl, bellying her human exterior, but it was half hearted. The dominance rituals were commonplace and would become even more so now that they were getting old enough to take part. But for the moment, the only alphas were standing together right then. Dmitri could wait.
“A clean kill,” she said, her heavy accent not masking the fact that she was impressed, as she always was, by the cleanliness in his kills. Hers looked like murder scenes. Well, human murder scenes.
“And of course you neglect to bring anything back for your poor, slaving mate, who is starving over her sink full of dishes. I am marrying Bigfoot and I shall weave fine coats of his back hair.” She grinned and pressed a kiss to his lips.
“The, how you say, Abominable? Yes, the Abominable Snowman and I, we shall have tea parties and speak of our horrid mates who never brought us even a weasel to feast upon.” And she kissed him again, because he was here, he was back and everything was good.
“I am joking, of course, I took Dmitri out and he caught me a hare as a gift. You should see how he moves. Already, you can see your influence on him.” Her smile was blinding with its pride and love; even when she knew that one day he could be challenging the both of them, he was her son and he would make an excellent alpha if he chose to.
“How goes everything on the territory?” she asked, wrapping an arm around his waist and leading him inside, out of the biting cold. The living room was alive with the activity of the pack, watching movies and arguing and battling for spots on the couch.
And she nearly closed her eyes and savored this moment, where everything clicked and everything made sense and everything was in its place.

As they walked into the house the Alpha of the Raegan pack laughed at his mate’s analogies to Bigfoot and the Abominable Snow Man. He had always admired her sense of humor, though others often failed to see it. She had always intrigued him, even if he hadn’t been the type to show it in the beginning. Her thick Russian accent added to the humor because of the way she pronounced some of the English words, but it was also something he had grown to love. In the beginning it was strange and he wasn’t always able to understand her, but over time he had grown to love it, just has he loved everything else about her.
Instead of joining the majority of the pack in the main living room he lead her through the house to the den, which he felt was aptly named because of their being wolves. Upon entering the large room he unwrapped Alexandra’s hand from around his waist and sat in his favorite, leather recliner. As he sat he pulled his mate into his lap and threw his arms around her, kissing her cheek. “My dear! I have missed you so. Three days is quite a long time.”
Once he settled in, he reclined the chair and grabbed the remote from the small table on his right. He loved this house, almost as much as he loved his family. To hear that his oldest son was moving as he was, learning from him and his tactics pleased him. He had spent more time with him in the woods with him the last few months, and was pushing him more and more. He knew that one day this would be used against him, and he also knew that there was a good possibility he would lose, as he would probably be forty years old by then, but that was something that they would have to take care of when they came to it, and as far as he knew that wouldn’t be any time soon.
“So, how’s everything been since I left? Anything major happen? As he spoke he changed the television over to the DVD player and pushed play, allowing the old movie to run on the screen. It was his favorite movie, mostly because the first time he had ever seen it was with Alexandra, and he loved almost everything they did together.

Well, seemed he had other plans.
Laughing, she shifted until she was comfortable and rested her head next to his on the chair. He kissed her cheek.

Any time was a long time when they were away from each other. She didn't know if it was the same for other alphas, but when Uri left, the hours seemed to drag. Her children provided some solace but his return brightened everything. It was when things were right, when the pack was whole and when she was with her mate. These trips were becoming longer and somewhat more frequent, a cause of no small amount of stress for Alexandra and, consequently, the rest of the pack. Acting in Uri's stead while she was gone was no challenge, but acting as if his absence did not bother her was. The whole pack felt the strain through their bonds, even while she had clamped down on it to mask her feelings. But now, she let her joy, her contentedness, flow out to the rest of the pack. They celebrated with light banter in the living room and she could feel their laughter and happiness welling up inside of her. She kissed Uri and smiled. “So, how’s everything been since I left? Anything major happen?" She thought for a moment. "No, nothing major. A few fights between the pups. A bit of a problem regarding dominance over the females, but that was resolved quickly. Still, don't be surprised if they are slow to eat. They want to prove I don't need to mark them for their disobedience."Her eyes hardened for a moment and she felt the females in the pack still briefly as they felt her recollection of the event. Then she felt their submission echoing through and she let them know that this satisfied her. "But otherwise? Everything has been fine. I've been teaching the pups some fighting, particularly with animals larger than themselves. Most of them are catching on quickly. Nicholas did particularly well. He flipped Dmitri." Which was a feat in itself; Dmitri's pride hadn't quite recovered and he was taking every opportunity to assert his child-dominance when Alexandra's back was turned. It was amusing, in a sense, but also bothersome; the other children needed to develop as well. But for the time being, those worries were muted. Tonight was a night for relaxing. For rejoicing. She drew a hand gently down his cheek, feeling the roughness of new stubble there. "I missed you," she whispered, eyes shining, kissing him again. "Don't leave again for awhile. I miss you too much lately." Her eyes closed and she touched her forehead to his, breathing in his scent, reveling in him. To think she had nearly hated him for so long. To think she had wanted nothing to do with him, had brushed off his attempts for so long it had become second nature. But his persistence was unrivaled and his honesty was disarming. When he finally claimed her as his own, she had to admit; it was a battle well won. And now look at her. Pining away for him. Some will she had. She smiled at the thought, fingers running up his cheek, into his hair. 'Somewhere, my father is laughing at me,' she thought, but she didn't care. Uri hated being away from his mate and his mate and his pack. It was torture to him, but something that had to happen. Patrolling their territory was vital, and because they covered such a vast amount of land patrol was a three day job, if you moved quickly. Being the alpha, he had to partake in every job when his turn rolled around. Sometimes he hated it, but he loved his position, and was so used to it that being in any other spot would leave him feeling empty. He had been an alpha since he was seventeen, though he started in a much smaller pack, and had grown to love being in power, but not so much that he found everyone else’s opinions or thoughts to be wrong, as many alphas did.
For a moment a look of concern crossed his face. Some female had challenged his mate. That was always something that could grow into a problem, but for now he would let it lie. He knew that Lexy could handle herself, even if he hated to see her have to fight with any of the others in his pack. It was her place, just as much as it was his, and they were her fights.
"But otherwise? Everything has been fine. I've been teaching the pups some fighting, particularly with animals larger than themselves. Most of them are catching on quickly. Nicholas did particularly well. He flipped Dmitri." That made Uri chuckle. He knew how his oldest son was, and it reminded him so much of him when he was younger. He always fought with his pack mates, and when he lost he hated it, and it would ride on his mind for days. He was glad to hear that Nicholas had done well, for he was the smallest of the boys, even though he was older than Z.
“I miss you too sweetheart, I always do. I don’t have to pull perimeter patrol for another two weeks, so I’ll be here with you and the kids until then. I think we should do something with them one day, give them a break from their training, just for a day.” Though he knew how important it was to train them, he also knew how important it was for them to get a break once in a while and spend time with their parents, even if they didn’t always want too.
