Once, the world was something of a collage of many, many races. The fantastic and extraordinary were normal; humans were the exception. And then, at some point, it changed. Humanity expanded and the other races were cast to the shadows and forgotten. As humans ascended the ladder of evolution, the fantastic and extraordinary races, now the feared and hated, hid themselves and hid themselves well.
Humanity built their kingdom, and all else was barreled out of the way or ground beneath it.
But there were creatures more powerful than the humans could imagine, now that their memory had failed them and their eyes refused to see what lay beyond. One race in particular was known for its chaotic and malleable society and tendencies towards war and bloodshed.
The only thing saving the humans for many, many years, was in fact the monarch of these creatures. He was sympathetic to the human plight, even before their rise, and sought no war with them, instead choosing to leave them to their own devices.
But a monarch in a violent society bent on chaos is only monarch so long as no one is strong enough to take it from them. And though there had been none able to unseat him for years, one took the stand.
To the ancient humans, she had been known as the incarnation of war, walking among battlefields with symbols writ on her arms in ash and blood.
The Morrigan.
Her rebellion was quick and efficient and she sat as queen in what seemed to be mere moments. And, a creature of war and chaos if there ever was one, she made it the first order of business to start a war.
With the humans in particular.
Humanity crumbled. Civilization failed. And with horrific bloodthirsty creatures before them, seemingly conjured from the depths of their nightmares, they named the chaotic race responsible for their-near genocide, a name all too appropriate for the Morrigan and her war-hungry legion.
Demons.
And just as it seemed that humans would be wiped from the very face of the planet, the fallen monarch rose once more, his loyalists behind him, and challenged the Morrigan in return, locking her in a stalemate that prevented her from launching the finishing assault on the human race.
This stalemate has held for some time now, and the other races have begun crawling from their hidden worlds and into the light now.
Now they may truly experience the world. A world in the Aftermath.
